I have a hard time with Church sanctioned homophobia

So, like I said before, I'm a mormon. Not a very good one because I tend to question everything. Anyway, at General Conference last weekend, one of the leaders spoke about gay people. He said things that I have such a hard time with. He claimed that gay people can be "cured" as if it's some sickness that they have. How do we expect to show our love for people when our religeous leaders can't show it? "We love you but you can't be who you are..you must change..."
